Boxpark Shoreditch to close at the end of summer

Boxpark Shoreditch is set to close at the end of summer as the area undergoes redevelopment.

The venue opened in October 2011 as a ‘meanwhile use’ venture, the term for when a temporary lease is granted to allow tenants to trade from the premises ahead of a larger scale redevelopment.

The retail, drinking and dining hub has hosted dozens of designer brands as well as food and drink traders over the past 13 years. The rooftop bar element overlooking Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green Road has become a popular place to gather with friends, particularly to watch big sporting fixtures.

Boxpark CEO Simon Champion commented: “I want to take this opportunity to thank the millions of customers, tenants, and partners we have welcomed and worked with over the last 12 years. We are happy that we have played a role in the wider regeneration of the area along with our track record in delivering jobs and training for local young people, which has delivered significant reductions in deprivation levels in our local community.

“We will return as soon as we find the right opportunity, and we’re already in conversation with key stakeholders about a new offering for our Shoreditch customers.”

Founder of Boxpark Roger Wade said:“When we launched Boxpark Shoreditch in October 2011, it was the world’s first pop-up. Since then, we created over 1,000 jobs, supported 100+ independent businesses and attracted over 10 million visitors. As we close this chapter, my gratitude also goes out to all the dedicated staff and local community for their unwavering support throughout the years.”

“However, in the remaining time we have left in Shoreditch we will work as hard as possible to support our team with the transition and aim to relocate our 30+ tenants and their staff at our other sites, whilst giving all our wonderful customers an unforgettable farewell.”

It comes as Boxpark have announced two new London venues will open this year, one in Camden and the other in Liverpool Street.
